Day 1 of the ABSA Cape Epic completed

The Toyota team of 10 have successfully completed the first day of the 2010 ABSA Cape Epic. With nothing but fun had by all, the team is in high spirits for day two.

Leading veteran cyclist Andrew McLean and partner Shan Wilson lead the way with pride, as they tackled the tricky terrains and came out in a very respectable 19^th place at the close of business today.

 “I am really proud of our performance for stage one. With roughly 50km to go, Shan took a bad fall, clipping his chin and grazing his chest. This unfortunately slowed us down significantly, moving us back from 5 minutes off the leaders to 25 minutes. We also had two punctures which didn’t help our cause. Overall I thought the race was a great challenge and we both enjoyed every minute.”

John Thomson and David Labuschagne came in next, followed sometime later, hand in hand, was Danie Smit and Kobie Pruis.

Michael Mol and Jeremy Thomson then followed suit coming in with over 7 hours of grueling mountain biking behind them, the team was visibly proud of their achievement.

Shaun Bartlett and teammate Bruce Diesel, crossed the finish line with only 15 minutes before the cut off, however the main concern being Shaun’s injury to his hamstring;

“I couldn’t have done it without Bruce, he was superb. After less than 30km, I pulled my hamstring and was in considerable pain. I found the railway tracks the most challenging and we are in for a tough day tomorrow. I am off to the physio now, to see what she can do before tomorrow’s 7am start.”

A CSI donation will be made to the Toyota SuperCycling Academy on behalf of the two celebrity teams of R100 per km for every one of the 722km completed in the race.
